Historical

After GC I / 5, GC II / 5 is the second Fighter Group to be converted to Curtiss H75 in March 1939

On the date of the outbreak of the German attack of May 10, 1940, the GC II / 5 is attached to the Group No. 22 of the "Air Forces Reserves" of the ZOAE (East Air Operations Area).

The GC II / 5 retreats to AFN from June 18, 1940. It will have carried out the entire campaign of France on Curtiss H75 and at the the Armistice, the Group presents a record of 48 Victoires Sûres and 23 Likely, figures lower than those GC I / 5 for example, also on Curtiss H75, but for the loss of only 2 pilots killed and 7 wounded.

Georges DUNOD entered the Ecole Polytechnique in 1928. He attended the military and aeronautical application school in Versailles in 1930 and the Avord school in 1931, before being posted to the 11th bomber aviation regiment in 1932. He served several periods in reserve from 1935 to 1938 before being recalled in September 1939 and posted to the GC II/5. Demobilised in August 1940, he was recalled to AFN in May 1943 and posted to the Marrakech school and finally to the GC II/5. Georges DUNOD was demobilised in 1945 and served several tours until 1956.
Born 19 June 1908 in Saint-Cloud (92 - Hauts de Seine).
Died at Cannes (06 - Alpes-Maritimes) on 18 January 1908

Yves Fabre-Garrus was sent to the Avord training school in 1934. He was posted to the 12th Air Wing in Reims in April 1936 before being admitted to the Ecole de l'Air in Versailles in August 1938. He was posted successively to the fighter school at Etampes and Chartres, then to fighter group II/5 on 19 May 1940. He moved to Algeria in June 1940 and then to Morocco. He was posted to the aircrew training centre in October 1943, then to the fighter training centre in Meknes. He was transferred to the staff of the No. 4 fighter wing in August 1944, then assigned to the GC II/3 ‘Dauphiné’ in 1944. He attended the Hautes études aériennes course in April 1950. He was posted to the 1st Air Division and 1st Air Region in January 1951. He was admitted to the ESGA (Ecole Supérieure de Guerre Aérienne), then entered the CESA (Centre d'Enseignement Supérieur Aérien) in October 1952. He was posted to Air Defence Zone 902, as Chief of Staff, in Aix-en-Provence in December 1953. He was appointed Commander of the Rabat-Salé air base in May 1955. He was appointed Chief of Staff at the Moroccan Air Command in July 1957, then Commander of the Moroccan Air Force in April 1959. He became Chief of the 3rd office of the Air Force General Staff in July 1960, then First Deputy Chief of Staff of the Air Force in April 1961.
He was appointed Commander of the 3rd Air Region in September 1962 and finally Director of Military Personnel for the French Air Force in December 1965. Yves Fabre-Garrus retired from active service in February 1969 with the rank of Air Corps General.

Jean GISCLON did his military service in the French Air Force in 1933-1934. He re-enlisted and was posted to the Reims base in 1937. He joined the ECMJ I/16 squadron in 1940, then the Groupe II/5.
He withdrew to AFN with his Group and joined the Free French Air Force after the Allied landings in AFN. He was posted to the ‘La Fayette’ group in 1943-44 and fought on P47s, notably during the Italian Campaign.
In 1945, he was posted to the training base at Tours and then joined the 4th Air Liaison Wing at Villacouy.
at Villacoublay. He was appointed second-in-command of the Air Force Reserve Training Centre.
In 1960, back in civilian life, he became a journalist and writer. He published a number of books:

Marcel Hugues joined the infantry in 1910 and was posted to the 172nd and then the 407th infantry regiments. He joined the air force in 1915, attending schools in Avord, Pau, Cazaux and Villacoublay. He was posted successively to the MF 23, 77, 97, 81 and 95 squadrons, where he scored 5 air victories, making Marcel HUGUES an ace.
Marcel HUGUES was placed on leave from the army in 1921 and was recalled in 1938 to take command of Groupe II/5.
Born on 5 January 1892 in Belfort (90 - Territoire de Belfort).

Adrien LEPS enlisted voluntarily and was incorporated into the 9th and then the 1st regiment of hussars in 1915. Seriously wounded on 9th July 1915, he asked to join the Air Force and was commissioned as an observer in 1915. Initially a machine-gunner with the N 67, he was sent to the Ambérieux school, and qualified as a pilot in August 1916 and posted to the N 23, then the N 21. He flew the SPAD 2 and ended the war with 12 victories. He was recalled to active service in 1924 and posted to the 38th RA. Between the wars, he worked for the ‘Carburateurs Solex’ company. He was recalled in August 1939 and was posted first to the staff of the Etampes base, then to the GC II/5. He then joined the staff of General PINSARD's Groupement de Chasse 21. On 6 June 1940, when his airfield was bombed by the Germans, he was seriously wounded, along with General Pinsard, who had to have a leg amputated.
He retired in 1961. For the record, Adrien LEPS, a great tennis fan, was a linesman until he was... 84 years old!
Born 27 September 1893 in Angers (49 - Maine et Loire).
Died in Paris (75) on 18 December 1983.

Edouard SALES enlisted voluntarily in 1936. He chose aviation and took flying lessons at the Bourges School. Initially assigned to Reconnaissance, he switched to the Fighter Squadron and was posted to the 5th Air Wing. He took part in the French campaign with the GC II/5 fighter group, then withdrew to AFN.
After Mers-El-Kébir, he refused to go to England and returned to France after the Allied landings in AFN in November 1942. When the Germans invaded the Free Zone, he joined the Bergerac base, before being demobilised in Hyères. He looked for a civilian job and worked in a holiday camp before joining the 3rd Fighter Wing at Salon.
He became an instructor at Meknès in 1945 and at Tours in 1947. He was posted to the Cazaux base in 1948, then sent to Indochina from August 1950 to March 1952 with the GC III/6 group. He was in Germany at Lahr in 1952, then with the 10th Fighter Wing in 1953, and took command of the DAT at Versailles in 1954. He was sent to Algeria from March 1958 to June 1959, then posted to the staff of the higher command of the armed forces in the French West Indies in 1959. Edouard SALES was placed on leave from the Air Force in 1961 with the rank of Colonel.
Born on 15 August 1912 in Estos-par-Oloron (64 - Pyrénées-Atlantiques). Died in June 1997 in Meudon (92 - Hauts de Seine).
