Surveillance Squadron 1S-2

Historical

On August 28, 1939, the training section of Cherbourg is transformed into Exploration Squadron 1S-1, and it's the Lieutenant SOULEZ, boss of the section who becomes the leader of the new unit. First equipped with Latecoere 290 and CAMS37, it quickly receives CAMS 55 to replace the CAMS37 a little outdated and ... disarmed! These CAMS55 will be exchanged at the end of 1939, with the Gourdou-Leseure GL812 of the 2S1.

The Escadrille 1S1 is responsible for surveillance missions over the mouth of the Loire, but like all French units, it will be pushed south-west by the German advance and it joins Hourtin (Gironde), the June 25, 1940. Staff will scuttle all its aircraft before being evacuated by the road.
