Surveillance Squadron 1S-1


Historical

The unit was created in August 1936. Initially equipped with CAMS-55, it receives Loire 130 before the outbreak of the conflict, completed by Latécoere 298 from May 1940.

The squadron, based in Cherbourg, will be pushed back to "Berre l'Etang" by the advance of the German Forces. The unit will finally be dissolved in August 1940.

Latecoere 298 1S1-2 :
On 24 May 1940, the Latecoere 298 1S1-2, was shot down at sea by a ME 110. The two crewmen managed to evacuate the aircraft, but despite the help of Chief Petty Officer GORET, the Petty Officer 1st Classr LACHENY, injured , drowned. The Petty Officer 1st Class GORET will be recovered by a French minesweeper, the "Lucien Gougy"
