Surveillance Squadron 4S-1

Historical

Escadrille 4S-1 was born on April 1, 1928. Scheduled for assignment in Tunisia, it is based in Fréjus Saint-Raphael, before joining the Karouba base. During the Campaign of France, from this base, she will carry out missions of surveillance of the coasts of Algeria and Tunisia.

On June 22, 1940, two CAMS 55 will be victims of a mistake that could have been tragic. The two aircraft are attacked by a French fighter, and one of them, piloted by the Sub-Lieutenant GARDANNE, has to land in the middle of a field. The aircraft is destroyed, but the crew is almost unscathed: only two wounded are to be deplored.

The squadron is dissolved on August 30, 1940.
