Historical
Squadron E-4 was created
in 1936, to receive the three Latécoere 302 recently delivered
to the Navy. These aircraft are militarized versions of the seaplane
"La Croix du Sud" which has been illustrated crossing
the South Atlantic with J. Mermoz at the controls.
At the outbreak of the conflict,
the unit is based in Dakar. It is equipped with Latécoère
302 "Le Guilbaud", "Cavelier de Cuverville"
and "Mouneyrès". They will be joined on November
2nd by Latécoère 301 "De l'Orza".
Most of the missions consist
of convoy escort, anti-submarine surveillance, or search for enemy
ships. These flights can last more than 10 hours and the machines
are severely tested. From February 1940, only two aircraft are available
to perform the missions. "Mouneyrès", damaged in
November 1939 following an emergency ditching and a chaotic tow,
will be sent for repairs and will join the squadron only in June
1940. In January, "The Cavelier of Cuverville" will be
sent to Cherbourg for revision. It will narrowly escape the invader
and manage to escape to reach Port Liautey .. where it will be blocked
by the prohibition of robbery at the Armistice. L'Orza, returned
to Biscarosse for revision after the return of "Mouneyrès",
will be scuttled to avoid capture by the German forces.
The squadron will be renamed
4-E on August 1, 1940 and will finally be dissolved on August 15,
1943.
