Historical
The unit has its origins
in the former squadron 3-E1 which is renamed E-1 in August 1935.
The squadron is transferred from Berre l'Etang to Port Liautey in
August 1939, just before the outbreak of the conflict.
Placed under the command
of Lieutenant MORNU, it is then equipped with Breguet Bizerte, long-range
seaplane. The unit mainly performs missions of exploration or protection
of convoys off the coast of Morocco. Note an attack of a submarine
on November 15, but without success. The autonomy and reliability
of the Breguet bizerte are valuable assets to achieve these missions
can last up to 8 hours of flight.
Squadron E-1 will become
1E August 1, 1940. After the attack of Mers-El-Kebir, this unit
is authorized by the Germans, to continue its activity within the
Naval Aeronautics. Based in Karouba, from August 25, 1940, it will
finally be dissolved on December 8, 1942, after the landing of the
Allies in North Africa.
