Exploration Squadron E-6

Historical

The squadron E-6 was created in January 1939 on the base of Lanvéoc-Poulmic Placed under the command of the Commander BERNARD Marc, it is equipped first of 3 Latécoère 523. These aircraft, militarized versions of the civil aircraft Latécoère 521 "LV Vaisseau Paris", are capable of flying almost 20 hours! One of these three aircraft, "L'Algol" will be lost September 18: forced to land off Ushant after a breakdown, it is towed by the Torpedo "Le Boulonnais". But during the maneuver, "Algol" hits his savior, and begins to sink. It will be completed by the gunner Torpedo.

Following this loss, the E-6 Escadrille receives reinforcement, two aircraft originally planned for the E12 Squadron currently being created. These are the Latécoère 521 Lieutenant de Vaisseau Paris "and Latécoère 522" Ville de Saint-Pierre ", who will be militarized quickly, but the "Lieutenant de Vaisseau Paris" will be operational only in February 1940. Like all Exploration Squadrons, the E-6 will carry out during the French campaign long missions of surveillance and convoy escort. In January, the "LV Paris" is almost completed, the Latécoère 522 "Ville de Saint-Pierre" is returned to Air-France.

In front of the German advance, Squadron E-6 must leave Lanvéoc-Poulmic to withdraw to Biscarosse. The Latécoère 523 "Aldebaran" which was in revision since May, will have to be scuttled on the spot. The other aircraft land at Biscarosse June 18, 1940, before leaving for Port-Liautey June 19, 1940.
