Fighter Group GC I/1

1st Squadron (Ex SPA 31)
2nd Squadron (Ex SPA 48)

Historical

At the end of the first conflict, after having stayed in the Lorraine region, SPA 31 joined, when it was established in Germany, the one that will become its "sister squadron", the SPA 48, thus linking their destinies.

Thus the SPA 31 will become in 1924, after several changes of designation, the 5 ° squadron of the 34 ° Mixed Aviation Regiment.

On July 1, 1932, born the Fighter Group I/1 from the 34 ° dissolved RAM. SPA 48 and SPA 31 will be attached to this group until it is dissolved in November 1942.

Equipped with Nieuport Delage NiD, 62 C1, GC I/1 began in 1933 a task that the group will pursue regularly until 1938, scientific work of high altitude weather surveys.
In December 1934, although reMayning in the Paris area the Group is transferred from Bourget to Villacoublay, and the following year, the provisions of the plan I of equipment of the forces being concretized, it is re equipped with Dewoitine 500.
The year 1936 sees the GC I / 1 take position on the field of Etampes-Mondésir may before abandoning his Dewoitine 500 for Dewoitine 510, the fastest French aircraft of the time, but which will be largely exceeded when the Group will be put on alert on August 24, 1939, before this one reaches its looseness ground located in Chantilly les Aigles.
Assigned to the 1st Air Force, in the No. 21 Fighter Group, the GC I / 1 is responsible for covering the capital. The "Funny of War" will be for the Group the opportunity to leave his old D510 for Bloch 152 and train all the pilots on his new aircraft.

On the date of the outbreak of the German attack of May 10, 1940, the GC I / 1 belongs to the Fighter Group No. 21 of the ZOAN (North Air Operations Area).

He joined Laon-Couvron to provide coverage and protection missions for reconnaissance aircraft. On June 14, reinforcements arrived at the Group, in this case eight Polish Pilots from the Polish Fighter Group 1/145 whose aircraft have just been declared unfit. Not knowing their new aircrafts, they will nevertheless begin their operational missions the next day after noon. It is finally on the ground of Agen that the GC I / 1 learns the signature of the Armistice. The Group is exhausted, its equipment in poor condition.

Under the armisitice, the flights will be limited to the strict minimum due to lack of fuel: the group flies less than 100 hours per month. Young pilots come to replace the pilots of the campaign of France. The only rejoicing for GC I / 1, the month of June 1942 sees the transformation of the Group on Dewoitine 520, the normal endowment being completed in October.

On the night of November 26, 1942, the airfield of Lyon-Bron is invaded by the German forces, and under the pressure of the occupant, GC I / 1 is officially dissolved on December 1, 1942.
