                Seriously wounded
in air combat on May 23, 1940. The mission of that day consisted
in protecting a Bloch MB174 Reconnaissance aircraft piloted
by... Antoine DE-SAINT EXUPERY. The two men were also friends.
This mission will be narrated by the writer in his book "Pilote
                  de Guerre".
He will die by accident in November 1944 when the B24 which
brings him back from Algiers towards Le Bourget, crashes in
the forest of Saint-Prix (Saône et Loire) |

                Robert Starké
was born on 13 June 1915 in Woerth, Bas-Rhin. He joined the
Romilly air base as a student pilot on 24 August 1935. After
obtaining his wings, he joined the 1st Fighter Squadron based
at Le Bourget on 15 May 1936, then at Villacoublay and finally
at Etampes on 20 October of the same year.
On 24 August 1938, after signing a new contract, Sergeant Starké
was posted to the 2nd Escadrille of GC I/1. During the "Drôle
de Guerre", Sergeant Starké was promoted to the
                  rank of Sergeant-Chef.
On 20 June 1940, while flying over a HEINKEL HE111 that had
been destroyed on the ground, Sergeant STARKE collided with
another French pilot of the GCI/8, Sub-Lieutenant PORODO. Miraculously,
PORODO escaped unhurt, but Sergeant SARKE was found burnt to
a crisp in his aircraft. |
