In November 1938, Franck Finkelstein joined the French Air Force for 3 years and was posted to the Bataillon de l'Air 127, based at Avord.
In January 1939, he was transferred to GAO 544, which he left on 7 June 1940 to join GAO 511.
After the Armistice, he was transferred to Compagnie de l'air CA 96/101; he then joined Compagnie B at Uzein, stationed at Pau, before being posted to BA 101 at Toulouse-Francazal.
He was transferred to air base 155 in Casablanca, probably at the end of 1940, and was demobilised in February 1941.
A Jew, Franck FINKELSTEIN was arrested on 29 July 1942 and interned at Drancy. He was transferred to several camps in France (Pithiviers, Beaune-La-Rolande, Drancy), before being deported to Auschwitz, where he died on 17 November 1942.

Died on 7 June 1940 during a training flight. The Breguet 695 No3 flown by General GIRIER crashed on landing. General GIRIER was wounded, but Chief Warrant Officer WALSER died as a result of his injuries.Contrary to many writings, Chief Warrant Officer Charles WALSER was a mechanic and therefore could not fly the aircraft. After graduating from the Rochefort School of Mechanics, he was posted to Air Base 112 in 1936 and became Edmond MARIN LA MESLEE's mechanic at GC I/5. He will follow the pilot throughout the French Campaign in North Africa after the Armistice. Raised in rank, he will have to leave GC I/5 in 1944.
