Group of Bombardment of Assault GBA I/54

1st Squadron (BR 228)
2nd Squadron (BR 211)

Historical

In May 1937, the GBA I/54 took part in the first tests of Bombardment in sant flight. It received 4 Potez 25s which were replaced in March 1938 by Mureaux 115s. Following the encouraging tests, the GB I/54 became the 1st Assault Bombing Group: the GBA I/54. When mobilized, the GBA I/54 had 7 Mureaux 115 at the 1st Squadron and 10 Potez 540 at the 2nd Squadron. The first Breguet 691s were collected from 26 September 1939 on the Dugny-Le-Bourget field.
On 4 December the GBA I/54 was attached to the 6th Assault Bombing Brigade.
In March 1940, the GBA I/54 exchanged its Breguet 691s with 12 Potez 633s of the GBA II/54 for a departure to Soviet-attacked Finland, the unit taking the name "Ushant Expeditionary Group" for the occasion. The formation stops in England where it will stay 8 days. The armistice between the two belligerents will cut short the preparations.
On April 10, 1940, GBA I/54 received its first Breguet 693, and on April 15, 1940, GBA I/54, together with GBA II/54, was attached to Group No. 18 of the 1st Air Division of NAFTA (Northern Air Operations Zone).
Following the heavy losses suffered by the Group during the fighting of May 1940, GBA I/54 received the reinforcement of 15 crews from GBA II/35, a unit withdrawn from service to reinforce the badly hit GBA I/54 and GBA II/54.
At the Armistice, GBA I/54 was on the Mont-de-Marsan field. Upon learning that this field would be in the occupied zone, Lieutenant-Colonel Démery ordered Group 18 to rejoin the Toulouse field without taking into account the Armistice conditions. Only GBA I/51 and GBA I/54 were authorized by the invader. GBA II/54 therefore merged with GBA I/54, which also received the crews of GBA II/35, which had recently been disbanded.
The GBA I/54 group was finally disbanded on December 1st 1942 on Orange Airfield...
