Claude MANGIN was a student at the Versailles school in 1936 and was posted to the 51st squadron in 1938. In 1938, he volunteered to switch from bombing to fighter aircraft and was posted to a fighter group at Sète, with which he took part in the French campaign in 1940. He was posted to Sidi Ahmed in Tunisia and took part with the I/8 ‘Vendée’ group in the bombing raids on Italy in 1944 and in the liberation of the Royan pocket.
He was appointed instructor at the Tours school in 1945, then second-in-command of the Coblence base in 1948. He was posted to the 1st Wing at Dijon in 1949, then appointed commander of Air Defence Zone 901 in 1951. He was assigned to the personnel department in 1952 before being appointed commander of the Metz base in 1954. He joined the École de guerre in 1955 and took part in the Suez operation in 1956. He was appointed to the Inspectorate General of the Air Force in 1957, to SHAPE (General Staff of the Allies in Europe) in 1960, and finally to the Joint Staff of the Air Force Command in Algeria at La Reghaïa in 1962. He was an auditor at the CHEM (Centre des Hautes Etudes Militaires) and was again appointed to the headquarters of the Allied Forces Central Europe in 1964. Claude MANGIN was placed on aircrew leave in 1966 with the rank of Air Brigadier General.

Note: I have no confirmation to date that Claude MANGIN described here and Lieutenant MANGIN below are the same person. I am therefore keeping both names until I can confirm the first name of Lieutenant MANGIN of GC II/7.
