Bernard CHRETIENNE enlisted early in October 1937 and was posted to the French Air Force, joining the Reims Air Base in 1937, where he tried unsuccessfully to pass the EOR exam and then the Radios-Navigants exam. He joined the 704th signals company at Mourmelon and became a radio operator in a car. He was posted to the GB II/12 in 1939, with which group he took part in the French Campaign as a radio-navigator.
Bernard CHRETIENNE was emobilised after the armistice in August 40.

Roger VASSEUR joined the French Air Force in April 1934. He was posted to the BA 111 air base at Metz before moving to the BA 101 air base at Toulouse-Francazal in January 1935. He was admitted to the Bourges flying school in May 1936 and obtained his pilot's licence in October of the same year. He was posted to the 12th Bombardment Wing in March 1937
On 11 May 1940, LéO 451 No 45, its landing gear damaged by Flak, crashed on landing: the crew was unhurt.
After the Armistice, he managed to reach England in August 1943. He was posted successively to the ‘Guyenne’ and “Tunisie” bomber groups before being incorporated into the RAF, in the 346th Heavy Bomber Squadron II/23 ‘Guyenne’. Aboard Halifaxes, he took part in operations for the Normandy landings, attacks on marshalling yards and targets in Germany.
After the war, he became a test pilot for aircraft coming out of overhaul. He then took part in the Indochina War with Bombardment Group GB I/19 ‘Gascogne’. He took part in the ‘Maintenance of Order’ operations in Algeria from 1952 to 1955.
Commander Roger VASSEUR was placed on permanent aircrew leave in October 1959. He then had 298 war missions and 5685 flying hours to his credit...
Returning to civilian life, he became a driving licence inspector from 1967 to 1979.
