                   Jean ACCART joined the
French Navy in April 1932. He joined the navy and obtained
his pilot's licence in 1933. He was posted to the 1st squadron
of the 5th fighter squadron in 1936 before being appointed
commander of SPA 67 in 1938 (1st squadron of GC I/5). During
the French Campaign, he was seriously wounded in aerial combat
on 1 June 1940, and after his convalescence he went on to
recreate the advanced fighter section of the Ecole de l'Air,
based at Salon. In November 1942, he was placed on armistice
leave and managed to leave France for AFN via Spain. He was
given command of the Berry fighter group, known
as 345 Squadron in the RAF. After completing a training period
at the Command and General Staff School in the USA, he was
assigned to the General Staff's Studies and Plans Office and
                    to the Air Force Inspectorate.
In 1946, he was a fighter
instructor at the Centre d'Enseignement Supérieur Aérien
before being appointed Chief of Staff at the Air Force Headquarters
in December 1946. He became deputy director of the Bretigny
test centre, then fighter inspector in 1952. In September
1952, he took command of the Reims air base, before becoming
2nd Deputy Chief of Staff of the French Air Force in September
1955. He was then assigned to the General Chief of Staff of
the French Air Force and as such was the national air defence
representative at SHAPE. He became deputy to the Air Force
General Major in February 1959, then took command of the 1st
