Surveillance Squadron HS-1

Historical

This unit, originally known as 7S-2, became the HS-1 Escadrille on October 1, 1938, attached to the seaplane carrier, "Commander Teste".

At the outbreak of hostilities, the unit and its Home Ship are based in Oran. It was Lieutenant HAMELET who was in charge of the command of the unit before being replaced in November 1939 by Lieutenant LE-ROUX. The "Commander-Teste" being taken by seaplane transport missions, the Squadron is disembarked and will operate from now on from the base of Arzew, until the end of the Campaign of France. The unit now based on land, is attached to the BPAN of Karouba on 1 February, thus ending its attachment to the Flotilla F1H "Commander Teste". The unit performs from this base, monitoring missions. It will lose during this period, the Loire 130 No. 32, which after ditching, can not be towed and will sink. The crew will be safe.

After Italy's declaration of war, the missions intensify. By a bad blow of fate, one of the last missions of the Naval Aeronautics before the Armistice will be fatal to three men of the unit: On June 24, at the end of the afternoon, the Loire 130 n ° 16 "s 'crushes' at sea, the crew is killed: Lieutenant LE-ROUX, commander of the unit, Petty Officer LACAMPAGNE, pilot and Chief Bosun’s Mate BELUCHE, Radio

On August 1, 1940, the HS-1 Squadron became 1-HS, but would finally be dissolved on August 31, 1940.
