Fighter Squadrons AC-3

Historical

The AC-3 Squadron was born on December 1, 1939, at Cuers, relying on the pilots of the HC1 Escadrille and the HC2 Embedded Hydraviation Group. It is the boss of the HC1 who takes the command of the new unit.

At the beginning of December, the pilots of the AC-2 are regrouped in Orly to collect their ... Dewoitine D510, aircraft totally out of date at that time that the Air Force generously provided them! To assist them in taking control of these aircraft, Chief Warrant Officer HOURCADE of the Air Force is assigned to AC3. The trainings follow each other, and the first "modern" Bloch 151 finally arrive in April.

In early June 1940, the AC-3 joined the Cuers airfield to prevent an Italian attack deemed imminent. On June 15, a particularly severe confrontation pitted a major force of Fiat CR-42 with Bloch 151 of the AC-3. Some Italian planes will be shot down (figure difficult to advance) but at the cost of the loss of two French pilots, including Petty Officer LE-BIHAN who, touched, voluntarily throws himself on his assailant to drag him into his fall.

On June 24, the French units are ordered to join North Africa, but the low autonomy of the Bloch 151, does not allow them, a priori not to try the crossing. Three pilots will try anyway, and will succeed flying at the most economical pace possible and will land with a few liters of gasoline reserve ..
