Fighter Squadrons AC-5

Historical

The AC-5 Escadrille was created just before the Armisitice on June 20, 1940. It was formed with the sailing personnel of the Hourtin Marine Hunt School: students and instructors. It is endowed with Morane MS406, come from different horizons and 4 Bloch MB152.

The squadron will perform several missions of bomber interceptions, without success. The MS406 Morane are often unable to catch up with the fast German bombers

On June 23, 1940, during a double patrol, Lt. PIREL and Petty Officer PIVEL attack Fort Chay at Royan. Petty Officer PIVEL will be shot down by the Flak of the fort: it will be the last pilot of Naval Aeronautics shot down before the Armistice.

The squadron was ordered to join Hyères, but bad weather prevented it, and the unit finally arose at Saint-Laurent de La Salanque.
