Fighter Squadrons AC-1

Historical

This unit is initially part of the "Flotilla of Bearn" (future flotilla "F1A"), under the name of Squadron 7C1. It was not until October 1st, 1938, that she became the AC-1 Squadron. At the outbreak of the conflict, the unit is disembarked from Béarn and joins the land base of Calais. The unit is equipped with old Dewoitine D376, assets unable to engage a potential enemy ... Following accidents occurred in a unit of Toulon, these aircrafts are also temporarily prohibited from flying in December 1939. From January , the Squadron begins to collect Potez 631, ceded by GC II / 8. But weather conditions cause training on these new aircraft, and the AC-1 is transferred to the south, to facilitate this training.

On March 6th, the AC-1 and AC-2 squadrons were regrouped into a F1-C Flotilla, and on March 18th, they joined the Calais airfield. The missions of these two units will often be common.

On May 10, 1940, at dawn, the Calais airfield was attacked by German planes. Four Potez succeed despite everything to take off, but without being able to reach the attackers. The following days, the Squadron's Potez will carry out escort missions of bombers or ships. May 21, 1940, the AC-1 folds on the ground of Querqueville, but the "Roulants" will not be able to join by the road, and will be made prisoners.

From June 2, the Squadron began to re-equip in Dewoitine, with a full endowment on June 19. The unit joined the Hyères base before joining Algeria.
