                Before the
war, Jean RIDEAU was a member of the Aviation Club de Touraine.
He qualified as a glider pilot in June 1932 and, in the summer
of 1933, took over the management of the Aero Club. Jean RIDEAU,
an aircraft mechanic during his military service, took over
the family business of building wooden blinds. He began building
a glider, which made its first flights in May. But he gave in
to the new Pou du Ciel fashion and abandoned gliding. In 1936,
he passed the instructor's technical exam.
Jean RIDEAU returned to gliding and built a new glider, the
                  Minéo M-5 in 1939.
Mobilised in September 1939, he took part in the French campaign
                  with GAO 509.
After the liberation, he restored a C230 cauldron that had been
hidden from the occupying forces. In 1946, the Fédération
Aéronautique Internationale awarded him the silver glider
pilot badge (D) with the n°108. Later, he built a Bébé
Jodel in North Africa. He was in Cannes in 1958. René
Fournier was looking for a place to build his RF-01, in Cannes.
He has just found his joiner. |

                   Originally an Infantry
Officer, then a Rifle Officer in North Africa, he joined the
French Air Force in 1935 and was posted to the 51st Air Wing
at Tours, before joining GAO 504, then based at Chartres,
in October 1938. He was appointed Group Commander on 15 March
                    1939.
                  After the Armistice, Jules
Roy remained loyal to Pétain and published "La
France sauvée par Pétain", a work that
confirmed his attachment to the Vichy regime... However, Jules
Roy joined the "Gaullists" after the Allied landings
in North Africa in November 1942. Jules ROY went to England
and fought in the Free French Air Force from 1943 to 1945.
He was flight leader, bombardier and co-pilot in the "Lorraine"
                    heavy bomber group.
                  Drawing on his memories
of these missions over Germany, Jules ROY wrote "La Vallée
heureuse" (The Happy Valley), which won him the Renaudot
literary prize in 1946. Later, in 1951, he wrote "Retour
de l'Enfer", his war diary written between 9 September
                    1944 and 15 March 1945.
                   A colonel and head of
the Air Force Information Service, he took part in the Indochina
War before expressing his disagreement with the policy pursued
in Indochina: he resigned from the Army in 1953 and devoted
                    himself fully to writing.
                  Jules Roy, author of some
fifty books, was awarded the Grand Prix de l'Académie
française for his body of literary work in 1956.

SAGON, a former student of Polytechnique, class of 1932, qualified
as a pilot in August 1939.
On 21 December 1939, his aircraft, Potez 637 no. 14, was shot
down by 2 British Hurricanes, fooled by the silhouette of the
Potez, which was very similar to that of the German Me110. Only
Lieutenant SAGON, seriously wounded, parachuted out and survived
                  the attack.
After convalescing, he joined the GR II/22 and was taken prisoner
after being shot down in aerial combat. |

                Alexis SANTINI
was called up in 1935. He was a student pilot at the Istres
school in 1939 before being posted to the GR II/36 in 1940.
After the Group was disbanded in August 1940, he took charge
of the men in the Uzès Troupe and volunteered to go to
Indochina, but after his departure was cancelled, he was posted
to ECN I/13, Escadrille de Chasse de Nuit (Night Fighter Squadron).
He was demobilised in 1942 and joined the Forces Françaises
de l'Intérieur des Alpes in 1944.
He was posted to Indochina from 1946 to 1949, then again from
1950 to 1955, where he was in charge of helicopter testing.
He was posted to the Chambéry training base in 1956,
then to Algeria where he headed the helicopter training division
until 1962. He was appointed to the command of light aviation
at Villacoublay. Alexis SANTINI was placed on leave from the
Air Force in 1963 with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. |

                In 1935, Charles
Sarlandie entered the Poitiers Artillery School. A reserve second
lieutenant, he was posted to the 105th R.A. (Artillery Regiment)
at Bourges and did a training period at the Avord air base to
                  obtain the Air Observer's Certificate.
He was recalled in March 1939 and posted to GAO 512 based at
Limoges. There he met René Ségui de Sarlande,
an aviator pilot and reserve staff sergeant, who regularly came
to do training courses and was known to everyone as "Le
                  petit chef".
                  After the German attack
on 10 May 1940, the GAO 512 Group retreated southwards, finally
arriving in Bordeaux, where Charles Sarlandie boarded the
Cargo ship "Le Fort de Vaux" for Casablanca in Morocco.
It was on board that Charles Sarlandi heard General de Gaulle's
appeal, but despite the enthusiasm of the troops on board,
the Captain of the ship, a convinced Pétainist, refused
to turn away to go to London...
The landing therefore took place in Casablanca as planned,
and the GAO 512 Group joined the Casablanca Air Base, where
                    it was re-equipped with Gleen-Martin 167Fs.
Charles SARLANDIE, faced with the uncertainty of the situation
in North Africa following the tragic attack on Mers El Kébir
by the British, joined his family in Sarrazac, France, at
the end of the summer of 1940. In October, he met up again
with René SEGUI DE SARLANDE, whom he had met when he
was at GAO 512 in Limoges.

                  Together, they recruited
former members of the GAO 512 group, in particular, to feed
the Resistance groups that provided intelligence for the Free
                    French.
But René SEGUI DE SARLANDE, hunted down by the Gestapo
and the Milice, had to go into hiding, and passed the torch
to René Tallet, who took up René SEGUI's nom
de guerre: "Violette". He created the "Violette"
Battalion, which fought very actively against the occupying
                    forces.

                René
SEGUI DE SARLANDE, after the Armisitice, took an active part
in the Resistance under the alias of "Vilolette".
With Charles Sarlendi, he took part in recruiting Resistance
fighters for the G.A.O. network. In particular, he contacted
former members of GAO 512. The cover provided by his garage
in Sarlande, and his role as a model aircraft instructor, meant
that he was able to travel frequently to Périgueux. But
René SEGUI DE SARLANDE, actively sought by the Gestapo
and the Milice, had to go into hiding. René TALLET took
over the pseudonym "violette" and replaced René
                  SEGUI DE SARLANDE. |
