posted to the GAO 502 observation group. He escaped from France
and joined the FAFL on 13 May 1941. He attended British and

group). He was taken prisoner of war in September 1944.
After the war, in 1947, he was posted to the Cognac base-school,
then to Indochina in 1948. On his return to France, he joined
the Avord Flight Training Division in 1950. He joined the Ecole
Supérieure de Guerre Aérienne in 1954, then was
posted to the 4th ATAF in Germany, and to GATAC No. 3 in 1958.
He also served in Algeria. In 1961, he was appointed commander
of the Cognac base, then commander of the 2° RA (Région
Aérienne) in 1963. Léon PETIT retired in 1966

was drafted in 1936 and joined the Istres school. He qualified
as a military pilot in 1937 and joined the 32nd Reconnaissance
Wing based at Chateauroux. He passed the EOR (Reserve Officer
School) and joined the Avord School before being posted as a
pilot to the GAO 520, with which group he took part in the 1940
campaign. On 24 September 1939, he managed to return his Mureaux
115 No. 107, which had been badly damaged after an Me109 attack,
to its airfield. He was taken prisoner on 16 June at Neufchâteau
and sent to an oflag in Germany. He tried to escape several
times: he started an underground tunnel, but was sent to another
camp. He escaped from the train and headed for Munich, then
Lindau and Bregenz. He was recaptured and imprisoned in Bregenz,
then taken back to oflag XVII near Austerlitz, where he began
                  digging underground again until 1945.
He resumed training at Avord in 1946, was assigned to the military
rehabilitation service and then to the sports section of the
3rd Bureau. From 1948 to 1953, he worked in the central sports
department, then in 1954 in the information department of the
Air Armed Forces Secretariat. He was posted to the DAT in 1955
and then again to the sports department. Edmond PETIT was placed
on aircrew leave in 1961. |

He did his military service in the air force. From 1934 to 1939,
Jean Pompéi held a number of senior civil service posts
in mainland France, including Sub-Prefect of Bellac (87 - Haute-Vienne).
On mobilisation, refusing a special assignment, he asked to
be posted to the Groupe Aérien d'Observation 512, as
a sergeant pilot. Again at his request, he later joined the
GAO 582 based in the Levant.
In September 1940, he joined the Free French Air Force. In August
1941, he was appointed Chief of Staff to the General Air Commissioner
of the FAFL in London and appointed Prefect of Oran in January
1944. In August 1947, at his own request, he was released and
appointed by General de Gaulle to the political leadership of
the Rassemblement pour la France. Appointed Préfet hors
cadre, from 1953 he held a number of positions in the industrial
sector. He died in June 1972 in Paris. |
