                Michel Madelin's
father, a Great War veteran, was killed in action in May 1915.
Léon Madelin, an officer in a Chasseur à Pied
battalion, was close to General Philipp Pétain, who had
been his ibstructeur. Michel Madelin joined the Saint-Cyr Military
School and the Air Force School, where he became an instructor.
Between the two wars, he was posted mainly to Morocco.
On mobilisation, he joined the GB I/63 based in Algeria and
became Commander of the 2nd Escadrille.
After the Armistice, he joined General de Gaulle, with whom
he became close. Michel Madelin stood in the 1948 senatorial
elections in the Vosges, without ever having held a local office.
He was elected senator and sat on the benches of the Rassemblement
du peuple français (RPF), proving to be a particularly
active parliamentarian on defence issues. Charles de Gaulle
visited him on this occasion. He was not re-elected in 1952.
Recalled during the Algerian War, he ended his career at the
rank of Colonel, with recognition as a quart-de-place
General. He was made Commander of the Legion of Honour. After
retiring from the army, he taught mathematics at the École
                  Saint-Sigisbert in Nancy. |

                Pierre Malaise
took part in both world wars. After the armistice of 1918, he
continued his commitment and took part in the Rif war and operations
                  against the great Syrian revolt.
He took part in the French Campaign as part of the GB II/31.
After the Armistice, in July 1940, he joined the military cabinet
of the Vichy air minister, before being transferred to the French
embassy in Spain as a military attaché, but above all
as a member of the air force intelligence service. This post
enabled him to help French nationals escaping from France and
interned in Spain. In 1942, he met General Giraud, who had taken
refuge in the Free Zone after escaping from the fortress of
Konigstein, and decided to join him. He left the French embassy
and became his representative in Spain. He set up an intelligence
service, which provided information to the Allies. He helped
refugees to join the African Army, but also tried to persuade
French resistance fighters to join General Giraud. Relations
with General DE-GAULLE's services deteriorated: in 1944, he
was accused of desertion, and tried in December 1946, but finally
acquitted. Returning to civilian life, he joined an insurance
company, where he worked for around twenty years. |

military engineering school in 1925-26 before passing through
the Cazaux camp and the Etampes flying school. In 1933, he completed
                  a series of training courses.
