An experienced pilot who had taken part in the fighting in Poland, Antoni WCZELIK joined France, via Romania, after the Polish defeat. He first fought with GC I/145 before joining GC I/1 on 14 June 1940. On 18th June, with the other Polish pilots of the Group, he joined Great Britain and fought with 302 Sqn. He was killed on 14th April 1942 on board a Spitfire during a fight against ME109s during a Boston Bomber escort flight.

After graduating from an infantry school in Konin, he was posted to the 10th Infantry Regiment in Lowicz, then transferred to the 12th Aviation Regiment in Krakow. In June 1936, he left for the Grudziadz aviation school. On graduating, he was transferred to the 121st Fighter Squadron, with which he took part in the occupation of Zaolzie and the brief 1939 Campaign. After the Polish defeat, he returned to France via Romania, and fought first with the GC I/145 before being posted to the GC I/1 on 14 June. On 18 June 1940, he left this group with the seven other Polish pilots for England. Once across the Channel, he trained with Squadron 308 from September 1940 to January 1941. He then joined Squadron 315 from January 1941 to June 1941, and finally RAF Squadrons 307, 605, 258 and 286. He finished the war as an instructor in an OTU.

Jan ZUMBACH prepared for the entrance examination to the aviation school and joined the Polish Air Force in 1936. He attended the officer cadet school in Debline and did a traineeship at the Kiel school. At the start of hostilities, he served as a liaison pilot. He fled the Russian invasion of Poland and reached France via Beirut. He landed in Marseille on 11 November 1939 and joined the French Air Force. He was posted successively to Lyon-Bron, Etampes and Villacoublay, where he took part in the defence of Paris.
When the Armistice came, he decided to leave France for London. He was posted to the RAF as part of a Polish fighter squadron. He took an active part in the Battle of Britain, scoring 17 victories. In 1944, he took part in the attacks on the bridges over the Meuse, and was taken prisoner two weeks before the end of the war. He left England and continued his flying career in the African wars, in Congo, Katanga and Biafra as a military adviser.
