Torpedo Squadrons T-2

Historical

At the declaration of the world conflict, the T-2 Squadron is based in Cherbourg under the command of Lieutenant LAMIOT. Training and missions continued until March 1940, the aircraft operating from the base of Cherbourg or Boulogne. Some contacts with enemy submarines took place, but without success. Anecdotally, it should be noted that on September 9, 1939, two submarines are sighted, but the two Latécoère 298 who locate them are equipped with torpedoes whose safety pins have not been removed, following the orders somewhat surprising in times of war ...

Like the T-1 squadron, the unit is attached early March 1940 to the F5T flotilla. At one time it was planned to send a group of 3 Latécoère 298 to Norway to accompany the expeditionary force, but the mission will eventually be canceled.

After the German offensive of May 10th, 1940, the T-2 escasdrille operating from bases from now on frequently bombed, participates in missions of attacks of objectives on the ground. But the Latécoère 298 are not really suitable for that, because too slow, they are very vulnerable to the German hunt. Thus, on May 23, 1940, during a bombardment mission of German armored elements, a group of 4 Latécoère 298 was attacked by 9 ME109. The balance is heavy: 3 machine gunners are killed, 3 men are seriously injured and two others are taken prisoner ...

The missions of Reconnaissance, convoy escort or ground attacks continue until June 18, 1940. Squadron T-1 then receives the order to withdraw and join Hourtin, then Berre l'Etang. On June 21, the unit took off to join the base of Bougie in Algeria where it will be caught by the Armistice.
