A Jew, Franck FINKELSTEIN was arrested on 29 July 1942 and
interned at Drancy. He was transferred to several camps in
France (Pithiviers, Beaune-La-Rolande, Drancy), before being

Alfred |
Staff-Sergeant

Tours-Parçay-Meslay
Air Base No. 109
|
Mechanic
|
He volunteered in July
1931 for the Fleet Crew Corps at Rochefort, but was judged
unfit due to insufficient teeth and sent home.
Undeterred, and with a passion for mechanics, he re-enlisted
in September 1931 in the 2nd Aviation Regiment at Strasbourg-Neudorf
as a non-aircraft mechanic, and in September 1933 joined Air
Base No. 3 at Tours-Parçay-Meslay.
He was awarded the Brevet Supérieur de Mécanicien
d'Aéronautique on 11 May 1934, as well as the Brevet
de Mitrailleur sur Hotchkiss modèle 1929. He was appointed
sergeant on 1 November 1934. He was then posted to the 31
½ Air Brigade, still at the Tours-Parçay-Meslay
base.
He was admitted to the Corps of Career Non-Commissioned Officers
on 28 March 1937 and was appointed Staff Sergeant on 1 July
1939.
He took part in the
French Campaign as a mechanic at the Tours-Parçay-Meslay
base.
On 17 June 1940, with two other men, he tried to reach North
Africa on board Potez 63-11 no. 111, but was attacked by
the Italian Chasse and forced to make a forced landing near
Salon en Provence.
On 16 October 1940, Alfred Hoffert was posted to Air Battalion
117, where he was seconded to Air Base 127 at Avord in the
Cher department.
He was appointed warrant officer on 1st July 1943, then
transferred to Air Battalion no. 175 of the Clermont subdivision
on 16th October 1944.
On 23 October 1944 he joined Tours Air Base, which had just
been liberated by the Americans on 28 August.
Appointed Chief Warrant Officer on 1st September l945, he
went on to reorganise the Tours training base.
He was then posted to C.R.A.P. 207 in Tours (personnel administration
assembly centre) on 20th December 1946, but this administrative
work did not interest him and he was admitted to the benefit
of the articles of the Law of 5th April 1946 relating to
the release of staff from service as of 20th December 1946,
he retired to the suburbs of Tours and never left.
Alfred HOFFERT was awarded the Military Medal on 31 December
1948.
