In 1937, Guy ARCAM signed a voluntary enlistment for 4 years and joined the Rochefort Air force apprentice mechanics school. in Rochefort. Volunteering for a posting to the TOE (External operating territories), he joined the GB I/39 based in Lebanon.
After the Armistice, keen to continue fighting, he managed to reach Egypt and enlisted in the Royal Air Force in September 1940. He then joined the Free French Forces in October 1940 and joined the EB1 Bombardment Squadron, which later became the Lorraine Group.
He was killed on 9 May 1942 during a flight from Cairo to Beirut aboard Caudron SIMOUN n°595: the wreckage of the aircraft, reported missing at sea, was found a few days later, but there was no trace of the crew...

François BLECH enlisted voluntarily in 1928 and was posted to the 7th squadron, then in 1933 to the 21st bombing squadron. He was admitted to the Ecole de l'Air de Versailles in 1935 as a mechanic, and joined the GR I/33 in 1937, with which he took part in the French Campaign. At the Armistice, he was demobilised. He was recalled in 1945 and posted to the 1st Air Corps, then to GR I/33 in Germany.
In 1950, he returned to Cognac and in 1952 was posted to the Air Force's equipment department. In 1959, he joined the GMMTA, before taking command of the Saint-Cyr base in 1963. François BLECH was placed on aircrew leave in 1964.

Louis BONNET did his national service in 1937 and was posted to the Air 206 battalion in Rabat. He trained as a radio telegrapher in 1939, then moved to the 2/589 squadron in 1940.
In 1943, he did a training course in Marrakech, then trained as a flight mechanic in the USA from September 1943 to May 1944. Back in AFN, he was demobilised in 1945.
He worked at AIA in Casablanca as a civilian mechanic before joining the US Air Force in 1950. He left Morocco for Monaco in 1956. He became a ground mechanic with Pan Am.

CARISTAN Hilarion - André

Hilarion CARISTAN voluntarily joined the air force in 1926 and was incorporated into the 1st GOA. He was posted to the 2nd squadron of the 22nd RA (Aviation Regiment) at Chartres in 1928. He was seconded to the Avord camp and then to Bron. He transferred to the colonial aviation service in the French West Indies and joined the 2nd squadron at Dakar in 1933. On his return to France, he was posted successively to the Villacoublay base in 1938, to the GTRA 591
in 1939, then to the III/10 fighter group in 1940, with which he took part in the French campaign as a mechanic. He withdrew to AFN, first to the Relizane base and then to the Blida base.
From September 1940 to August 1943, he served in various units of GB II/61. He was assigned to bomber group No. 1. He returned to the UK and completed a flight engineer training course at Saint-Atham before being posted to squadron M 346 in 1944. He was transferred to the liaison aircraft group in Austria in 1945.
In 1948, he was posted to command the Rabat-Salé base, then back to mainland France to the Normandie-Niémen II/6 fighter group in 1949. He was sent to the Far East from 1949 to 1951, then to the Rabat-Salé base. In 1953, he returned to Indochina with EROM 80. He was posted to the CATAC (Tactical Air Command) at Lahr in 1955, then seconded to the Saint-Cyr school in 1957.
Hilarion CARISTON retired in 1960.

Maurice DEPECKER joined the air force in 1937. He joined the 38th Aviation Regiment, then the regimental school in Metz, before passing the entrance exam to the mechanics school in Rochefort. He left for the Middle East and took part in the Istres-Damas-Paris race; he attended machine gunner courses before returning to France to Bordeaux, where he worked on the Bloch MB210. He took part in the French campaign as part of a GAO.
He resigned from the army and managed to escape from France via Spain in December 1942. He was arrested in Barcelona and imprisoned in Zaragoza and Miranda. He finally reached England and joined the FAFL in July 1943. Maurice DEPECKER was demobilised in 1945.

In November 1938, Franck Finkelstein joined the French Air Force for 3 years and was posted to the Bataillon de l'Air 127, based at Avord.
In January 1939, he was transferred to GAO 544, which he left on 7 June 1940 to join GAO 511.
After the Armistice, he was transferred to Compagnie de l'air CA 96/101; he then joined Compagnie B at Uzein, stationed at Pau, before being posted to BA 101 at Toulouse-Francazal.
He was transferred to air base 155 in Casablanca, probably at the end of 1940, and was demobilised in February 1941.
A Jew, Franck FINKELSTEIN was arrested on 29 July 1942 and interned at Drancy. He was transferred to several camps in France (Pithiviers, Beaune-La-Rolande, Drancy), before being deported to Auschwitz, where he died on 17 November 1942.

Raymond GEIGER qualified as a mechanic in 1934. He attended the Rochefort school and was then sent to various aviation companies for trials. He was posted to the GC I/7 at Dijon, with which group he embarked for Tunisia and then Algeria in March 1939. Back in France, he left for the Levant on board the ‘Commandant Teste’ and landed in Beirut with the GC I/7 in February 1940. He joined the RAF voluntarily in July 1940, then Free French Flight No. 2 with Commandant Jacquier. He went on a mission to Cyprus and then to Ismailia as an OTU. He joined the FAFL on 1st April 1941 and was posted to Fighter Group 1 at Rayak. He left with the ‘Alsace’ on an operation for Libya. He embarked with the Alsace for England in 1942 as an aircraft mechanic. After the war, he was assigned to GT I/15 in Orléans, then to the Technical and Industrial Directorate in 1946. Raymond GEIGER retired in 1961. Born on 29 July 1914 in Tours (37 - Indre-et-Loire).

After the Liberation, he gave "sound reading" courses for the Air Force at Château-Bougon airport.

He volunteered in July 1931 for the Fleet Crew Corps at Rochefort, but was judged unfit due to insufficient teeth and sent home.
Undeterred, and with a passion for mechanics, he re-enlisted in September 1931 in the 2nd Aviation Regiment at Strasbourg-Neudorf as a non-aircraft mechanic, and in September 1933 joined Air Base No. 3 at Tours-Parçay-Meslay.
He was awarded the Brevet Supérieur de Mécanicien d'Aéronautique on 11 May 1934, as well as the Brevet de Mitrailleur sur Hotchkiss modèle 1929. He was appointed sergeant on 1 November 1934. He was then posted to the 31 ½ Air Brigade, still at the Tours-Parçay-Meslay base.
He was admitted to the Corps of Career Non-Commissioned Officers on 28 March 1937 and was appointed Staff Sergeant on 1 July 1939.
He took part in the French Campaign as a mechanic at the Tours-Parçay-Meslay base.
On 17 June 1940, with two other men, he tried to reach North Africa on board Potez 63-11 no. 111, but was attacked by the Italian Chasse and forced to make a forced landing near Salon en Provence.
On 16 October 1940, Alfred Hoffert was posted to Air Battalion 117, where he was seconded to Air Base 127 at Avord in the Cher department.
He was appointed warrant officer on 1st July 1943, then transferred to Air Battalion no. 175 of the Clermont subdivision on 16th October 1944.
On 23 October 1944 he joined Tours Air Base, which had just been liberated by the Americans on 28 August.
Appointed Chief Warrant Officer on 1st September l945, he went on to reorganise the Tours training base.

He was then posted to C.R.A.P. 207 in Tours (personnel administration assembly centre) on 20th December 1946, but this administrative work did not interest him and he was admitted to the benefit of the articles of the Law of 5th April 1946 relating to the release of staff from service as of 20th December 1946, he retired to the suburbs of Tours and never left.
Alfred HOFFERT was awarded the Military Medal on 31 December 1948.

Robert NICAISE was a student mechanic at the Breguet school in 1939. He took part in the French campaign with the 21st Bombardment Wing (GB I/21 or GB II/21). He was posted to Morocco in 1941 and returned to the UK in December 1943. He was posted as a radio navigator to GB II/21. He was posted to Algeria in 1950, then to Indochina with GT II/61 ‘Maine’ and then to GBI-19 in 1952. He was posted to Orléans with ET III/61 in 1955, then returned to Algeria from 1956 to 1962. Robert NICAISE was placed on aircrew leave in 1967. Born on 16 August 1920 in Noyant (49 - Maine-et-Loire)
Died at Saint-Lambert-la-Potherie (49 - Maine-et-Loire) on 14 March 2006

Lucien REMAURY, a LATECOERE engineer in civilian life, was initially assigned to the Photo Department, before obtaining a position as a mechanic more suited to his skills.
On 28 May 1950, René REMAURY was killed in an accident involving a LATE 631: the aircraft disintegrated during a test at Cap Ferret. The 4 crew members were killed.
Killed on 28 May 1950 above Cap-Ferret.

After the Armistice, he was posted to the Air Force industrial workshop in Casablanca in December 1940, then to the GB I/32 group in 1941. He was placed on Armistice leave and then recalled in 1943 to the Fez transmission school. René TURPAUD was demobilised in 1945 and transferred to the reserves. Born on 7 September 1913 in Saint-Denis-du-Pin (17 - Charente-Maritime).

General GIRIER was wounded, but Chief Warrant Officer WALSER died as a result of his injuries.Contrary to many writings, Chief Warrant Officer Charles WALSER was a mechanic and therefore could not fly the aircraft.
