Historical
Following the decision to
add a third Group to existing Fighter Squadrons, GC III / 2 was
established in May 1939 with elements of GC I / 2 and GC II / 2.
First equipped with D501, he quickly touches MORANE 406 in July
1939.
On the date of the outbreak
of the German attack of May 10, 1940, the GC III / 2 belongs to
theFighting Group No. 23 of the ZOAN (North Air Operations Area).
Following the fighting, GC
III / 2 saw its number of MORANE 406 decrease sharply, and this
will lead the General Staff to transform the Group on CURTISS H75
end May 1940.
GC III / 2 will be dissolved
at ORAN August 25, 1940

|
Georges DARTEVELLE,
a student at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in 1939, was mobilised
and joined the 5th Escadrille of the GC III/2, a group with
which he took part in the French Campaign.
On 20 May 1940, during an attack on a formation of German
bombers, he was wounded, but managed to land his burning
aircraft in the French lines (MS406 n°358). In June
1940, the GC III/2 withdrew to Algeria, before being disbanded
on 25 August 1940.
Placed on armistice leave, it joined the Jeunesse
et Montagne organisation, whose stated aim was to
keep demobilised Air Force officers and volunteers active,
in order to provide training for young people.
When the organisation was disbanded in January 1944, Jacques
DARTEVELLE resumed his training as an architect at the Ecole
des Beaux-Arts, where he obtained a final distinction on
09 November of the same year.
In January 1945, he
joined the Groupe de Chasse DORET, newly renamed GC
II/8 Saintonge. This group, equipped with D520s, had
the distinction of being the only fighter group commanded
by the French Forces of the Interior. Based at Cognac at
the time, the group took part in reducing pockets of German
resistance in La Rochelle and Royan. As the Groupe Doret
was gradually re-equipped with Spitfires, the old D520s
were grouped together in a new Groupe de Chasse GC I/8 Vendée
based at Cognac. Lieutenant DARTEVELLE was one of the pilots
assigned to this group.
On 1st March 1945, Jacques DARTEVELLE took part in a mission
to strafe a German column. During the engagement, Lieutenant
DARTEVELLE's D520, flying too low, hit some trees and crashed
to the ground where it caught fire instantly. The pilot
burned to death in his aircraft.
Lieutenant DARTEVELLE's body was buried in the Enghien les
Bains cemetery.
