More
than 1100 Morane-Saulnier MS-230 and derivatives have been built
since the first flight in February 1929 .
To
date,32 aircraft are listed below (28
MS230 - 2 MS231 - 1 MS234 - 1 MS237) ::

The Morane-Saulnier MS-230
is the result of a program launched in 1928 by the French Ministry
of Air to provide the French Air Force and the French Navy with
an E2 twin-seater training aircraft. Three of the manufacturers
competing in this competition, Gourdou-Lesseure, Bloch and Loire-Nieuport
proposed somewhat outdated projects. Only the Morane-Saulnier Company
stood out with a modern and relevant aircraft, based on a remotorized
MS-133 and equipped with MS-181 landing gear.
Logically, it was this new
aircraft, the Morane-Saulnier MS230, that won the competition. The
aircraft was in the form of an arrow-shaped umbrella monoplane,
capable of carrying a student and his instructor in tandem. To facilitate
landings, the MS-230 was equipped with a wide track landing gear.
The fuselage, consisting of a mixed wood and metal lattice frame,
was covered with canvas. The aircraft is powered by a Salmson 9ABb
9-cylinder star engine developing 230 horsepower. The prototype
made its first flight in February 1929.
During the tests, the Morane MS-230 proved to have good flying qualities,
with an ease of piloting which augurs well for a training aircraft,
and the French Air Force, having been conquered, placed a first order
for 500 units, and the first production aircraft was delivered on
March 15, 1929... These aircraft are intended to equip the Flying
Schools, and some of them will be used in operational units as liaison
or service aircraft. The Aéronautique Navale will receive a
few copies as early as 1931 : 23 copies will still be counted in the
Navy's registers in 1940. The MS-230 will be used until the Armistice
and the occupant will seize some of them used in their turn in the
Luftwaffe Flying Training Schools. The Morane-Saulnier MS230 will
have a certain success abroad: it will be used by the Military Aviations
of Belgium, Brazil, Greece, Portugal, Romania, Switzerland, Turkey,...
It will also be built under licence in Belgium by SABCA under the
name MS-236 and in Portugal by OGMA (MS-233) ... In the hands of prestigious
pilots, it enthused the crowds during the airshows of the 30s: thus,
Michel Detroyat who raced the Michelin Cups aboard a modified Ms-230,
which became the MS-234. Hélène Boucher also owned a
copy: the No54 registered F-AJML.
The MS-230 also equipped the famous Patrouille Militaire Acrobatique
d'Etampes. This formation, the Patrouille de France of the time used
the MS-230 from its creation in 1931 until 1938.
About 1200 units were built until 1945. The last production was made
by the Levasseur Company which manufactured 48 MS-230 between 1946
and 1948.
