Air Observation Group GAO 517


Historical

Originally, the Group has for designation GAR 517. It will become GAO 517 on September 2, 1938.

On the date of the outbreak of the German attack of May 10, 1940, the GAO 517 is attached to the 5th Army within the Air Cooperation Forces of the ZOAE (East Air Operations Zone).

Sébastien Batlle studied at the Lycée de Perpignan.
He entered the Ecole de l'Air, graduating as Second Lieutenant in 1939 and then joined GAO517.
Wounded on 8 June 1940 aboard Potez 63-11 n°331, shot down by 9 Me109s,
After the Armistice, he was appointed Lieutenant in 1941, then Captain in 1944. After the war, he was appointed Commander in 1947, then Lieutenant-Colonel in 1952, Colonel in 1958, and finally Brigadier General in 1962. He was successively appointed Deputy Inspector General, Inspector of Reserves in 1963, Commander of the 4th Air Region in 1966 and finally Air Division General in 1967.

He was posted to the 35th Aviation Regiment as 2nd class on 17 April 1929.
Appointed Sergeant in October 1936, he joined the Marignane Air Base and was posted to the 8th Wing - 1st Group.
Appointed Warrant Officer in April 1939, he was transferred to Hyéres and joined GAO 517.
Killed on 4 June 1940 aboard Potez 63-11 n°327 shot down by 3 Me109s.

Killed on 4 June 1940 at D'Anizy-le-Château (02 - Aisne)
MICHET-DE-LA-BAUME Marie - Fernand

After the war, Marie MICHET-DE-LA-BAUME became Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Banque Régionale Périgourdine, then General Councillor for the Dordogne.
