Biography
Roger Teillet was born on January 25, 1914 in Périgueux, Dordogne. Engaged in 1935 under the Air Base of Rabat, Corporal Teillet was admitted as a student pilot on June 3, 1936. Patented 4 months later, he was promoted Sergeant and assigned on March 9, 1937 to the 1st Squadron of GC I/1 who is still equipped on September 3, 1939 with his old Dewoitine 510.
During a shooting campaign during the winter, Teillet proved to be one of the worst shooter in the Group, an image he will soon contradict in combat. On April 1, 1940, he was promoted to Staff-Sergeant.
On May 25, 1940, Staff-Sergeant TEILLET is decorated with the Croix de Guerre with palm.
Some feats of arm
On May 15, 1940, Staff-Sergeant TEILLET carried out a mission within a GC I/1 patrol covering a sector. The French pilots see a DORNIER DO17 trying to escape to the ground, but he is joined and his right engine catches fire under the attacks of the four fighters. The German bomber will crash on the ground. The victory is credited to the four members of the patrol.
Also on May 15, 1940, during a second mission, Staff-Sergeant TEILLET with five other GC I/1 pilots, attacks a DORNIER DO215. The rear gunner is out of action, and the plane seems distraught, but the French Fighters are forced to abandon him to his fate without being sure of his fall, to complete their mission.
On May 17, 1940, Staff-Sergeant TEILLET is on a mission with a triple GC I/1 patrol. This one is attacked by 4 BF 109E. In the ensuing whirling fight, Staff-Sergeant TEILLET manages to shoot down a BF109 whose pilot jumps in a parachute.
On May 18, 1940, he took part in a mission in a GC I/1 patrol. Staff-Sergeant TEILLET attacks from behind a HENSCHEL HE126, while Captain COUTAUD, leader of the patrol attacks him from the front. The enemy aircraft, in flames, crashes near Cateau.
On May 20, 1940, the Staff-Sergeant TEILLET took part in a cover mission of a railway near Creil. The GC I/1 patrol receives a DORNIER DO17 pursued by Morane MS406 from GCIII / 1. Staff-Sergeant TEILLET attacks the bomber from behind, while Captain COUTAUD attacks him laterally. The right engine on fire, the DO17, evacuated by its crew, will crash on a football field.
May 29, 1940, Staff-Sergeant TEILLET participates in a mission of the 1st Squadron of GC I/1 led by Captain COUTAUD. The patrol intercepts a DORNIER DO17. This one maneuvers to hide in the clouds, but the patrol is waiting for him below and above the cloud layer, and at each reappearance, he is hit to finally dive to the ground, engine burning, and crush near Laon. Victory is awarded to all patrol pilots.
On June 6, 1940, Staff-Sergeant TEILLET went on a mission with a quad patrol of GC I/1. They are attacked by BF109E. Sergeant TEILLET trying to clear Sergeant LEPROVOST, is himself attacked by a BF109E. But this one, carried away by the speed, is found in front of the French pilot who cuts it immediately. The enemy plane crashes south of Montdidier
On June 20, 1940, returning from a mission south of Romorantin, Staff-Sergeant TEILLET intercepts a HENSCHEL HE126 with a double GC I/1 patrol. The enemy aircraft, hit, crashes on the ground.
Records
Staff-Sergeant TEILLET is credited with 7 Sure Victories and 1 likely within GC I / 1 during the Campaign of France.
