Biography
Maurice DE SEYNES was born on August 7, 1914 in PARIS. He joined the School of Air in 1936 with the promotion "Captain Astier de Villatte". He is a particularly brilliant student and he gets his pilot's license in August 1937. He is assigned to the Fighting School of Romilly-sur-Seine and joined a year later, GC II / 6 in Chartres. He goes on campaign with his group stationed successively in Engelure, Dunkirk and Maubeuge.
Young pilot officer he is particularly distinguished. demonstrating during many engagements as much ardor as coolness. This exemplary behavior earned him a quote to the order of the air force, including the award of the Croix de Guerre for shooting down two enemy planes on June 5 and 6, 1940. Following the dissolution of his fighting group, he was assigned to reconnaissance group 2/14 in July 1940 and then to the Air School in Toulouse and to the Fighting Group II / 8 in Marignane. In 1942, his unit being dissolved. he decides to join the Free French Air Force (FAFL).
Assigned to the Fighting group "Normandy" on January 1, 1944. he participated in the victorious offensives in the areas of Vitebsk, Orcha. Borissov and Minsk. On July 15, 1944, his unit joined the Mikountani field to stay closer to the front. During these trips, it was customary for the mechanic to travel with his driver. but the small space reserved for it forbade the carriage of a parachute. Captain Maurice DE SEYNES flew away with his Soviet mechanic. Sergeant BIELOZOUBE says the "Philosopher" .Little after takeoff. the pilot returns to the field and reports that he has a gas leak in the cabin. Blinded. then intoxicated, he tries to land several times, but to no avail. He receives the order to parachute. Captain DE SEYNES refuses, in solidarity with his passenger, and crashes to the ground during his last landing attempt. The sacrifice of Maurice de Seynes greatly impresses the Soviet staff of the Normandy group. If they had ever had doubts about the fraternity of arms that united them to the French pilots, they had just had a tragic demonstration.
The Orange Air Base 115 has the traditional name "Captain Maurice DE SEYNES"
