Biography

Source (Photos and documents) : Mr Guillaume DEBART, Grandson of Jules WIBAUT

Jules WIBAUT was born on 1 April 1918 in Montigny Le Tilleul, Belgium.

His assignments:

Called up for armed service in March 1937, Jules Wibaut was drafted on 15 October 1938 and joined the Bataillon de l'Air 111 at Mourmelon air base on 4 November.
Jules WIBAUT also obtained his civil pilot's licence (n°10.300) on 1st April 1938.
He was transferred to the 14th Autonomous Air Group on 31st December 1938, before being posted to the Amiens 2/104 base from 31st May to 27th August 1939. On this date, he joined the Air Force of the 2nd Army Corps.
On 7th June 1940, he was posted to the Air Force of the 25th Army Corps, then joined the Air Force of the Paris Army on 19th June 1940
On 16th July 1940, he was posted to Air Company 5/138, then on 22nd July 1940, to Air Company 37/133 before finally joining the Air Company of GBA I/54 on 1st November 1940.
On 12 May 1941, he was sent to the Compagnie de Passage de Bitray and was demobilised the next day by the Lézignan Corbières Centre. Jules WIBAUT retired to Cappy, in the Somme.

Jules Wibaut kept a diary from day to day. It provides a glimpse into the life of a young man caught up in the events of History. It gives a glimpse of the journey of these men, jostled by the German attack on 10 May 1940, changing town almost every day until the Armisitice in June 1940.
I invite you to look through this notebook that Mr Guillaume DEBART, his grandson, kindly shared with me. The pages below are limited to 9 June 1941, the date of his return to civilian life. We have chosen not to share the following, more intimate pages. However, we can mention Jules WIBAUT's marriage on 7 October 1941 in Trosly Breuil (oise), and the birth of his daughter on 10 November 1942 in Ham (somme). However, his daughter was killed on 14 June 1944 during a British bombardment in Ham (somme) ....
Campaign for France period: March to June 1940
Post-Armistice period: June 1940 to 9 June 1941

Journey of Jules WIBAUT during the French Campaign :

The map below shows the main points of passage for Jules WIBAUT, from his departure from Versigny for Belgium on 10 May 1940, to his arrival in the south of France after his withdrawal across France.
In his notebook, Jules WIBAUT refers to a “GAO” (Groupe Aérien d'Observation), so I have cross-referenced Jules WIBAUT's route with those of various GAOs. GAO 502's route is very similar to that of Jules WIBAUT.
- Versigny airfield: GAO 502 was there from 23 March to 12 May 1940 and Jules WIBAUT from 23 March to 12 May as well
- Vouvray airfield: GAO 502 was there from 23 May to 13 June 1940 and Jules WIBAUT from 23 May to 7 June 1940, when he was posted to the Air Force of the 25th Army Corps.

It is highly likely that his unit will be attached to GAO 502.
