Biography

Piotr ZANIEWSKI was born on January 29, 1917 in Odessa from Piotr and Sophie LAGWINOW. His grandfather was deported during the insurrection of January 1863 against the Russians, but his father was able to return to Poland. His family remains in Russia, and they finally meet in 1922 to live in Grajewo.

He graduated from an infantry school in Konin and was assigned to the 10th Lowicz Infantry Regiment and transferred to the 12th Krakow Aviation Regiment. In June 1936 he left for the aviation school. from Grudziadz. On his release, he was transferred to the 121th Fighter Squadron with which he took part in the occupation of Zaolzie, and in the brief Campaign of 1939. After the Polish defeat, he joined France and fought first at GC I / 145 then, on June 14, he is assigned to GC I / 1. On June 18, 1940, he left this group with the other seven Polish pilots to join England.

Arrived on the other side of the Channel, he followed the instruction with the Squadron 308 from September 1940 to January 1941. He then joined the Squadron 315 from January 1941 to June 1941, and finally squadrons 307, and 605, 258, 286 of the RAF. He will end the war as an instructor in an OTU.
